Former deputy commissioner of the national police, Lieutenant General Bonang Mgwenya, said on Friday that she learned of his dismissal through media inquiries.

The national police commissioner, General Khehla Sitole, fired Mgwenya after she was found guilty in an internal disciplinary hearing for serious misconduct.

Responding to TimesLIVE questions, Mgwenya said: “As I have indicated, I have not yet been informed of any layoffs.”

When asked if he would legally challenge his dismissal, he said: “It would depend on the decision [to her]”.

She declined to comment on the criminal charges she faces.

Mgwenya was suspended in October after being detained by the Investigation Directorate [ID] on a series of criminal charges including money laundering, theft and fraud.

He appeared in Palm Ridge Magistrates Court in October in connection with the alleged role he played in securing the appointment of a service provider to equip 1,500 police vehicles in Gauteng with hazard lights.

In return, he allegedly received financial help to buy a BMW X5.
