JOHANNESBURG – Former South African Airways (SAA) chairman Dudu Myeni wants the state capture commission to believe that his appointment as a witness, Mr. X, was a slip.
But his demeanor and the repeated mentions before and after being warned not to name him make it hard to believe.

Evidence leader, defender Kate Hofmeyr, believes Myeni deliberately endangered the witness and wants her to be charged.
Myeni deviated several times during her testimony to say that she was falling victim to the media for being associated with former President Jacob Zuma.
He was answering questions about SAA when he first brought Mr. X in, out of nowhere.
“They are covering him, his name is Mr. X … He says things, he is covered, he is trusted … Why is he trusted? He is covered because he fears for his life.”
And then it was time for her tenure as chair of the Mhlathuze Water board, the moment when Mr. X said he laundered millions for her and she hit.

“This is the destruction of a family member. Mr. X is my family, his children are my children, Mr. X is my brother, there is nothing truth in hiding his identity … Mr. X It is my family. Our system continues to deplete the fiber of our society, I am not going to talk about issues, President, that belong to what the so-called Mr. X said because of the fear that has been presented to you.
Defender Hofmeyr believes she did so deliberately, and Supreme Court Vice President Raymond Zondo was disappointed.
“What he did is really something that would discourage other witnesses who would want to testify before the commission anonymously when they fear for their safety or their lives,” Zondo said.
Myeni’s legal team has until Monday to make presentations.
