A second suspect in the murder of Glen and Vida Rafferty appeared in Newcastle Magistrates Court on Monday, police said.

Dr. Vikani Ngwenya, 20, appeared in court and the matter was postponed until Oct. 26 for a bail investigation, police spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker said.

The couple was killed on their farm in the Normandien area on August 30. They were shot dead, allegedly by a group of attackers who overpowered them shortly after they arrived home. His dog was also shot.

Naicker said that last Thursday, October 15, detectives from the Provincial Organized Crime Unit arrested five suspects who were detained for questioning in connection with the murder of the couple.

“A vehicle suspected of being used in the commission of the crime was also seized as part of the ongoing investigation,” Naicker said of Ngwenya.

Naicker said that of the original arrests, three of the men were released, while another remained in custody “pending further investigation.”

The couple’s murder highlighted farm killings, and Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the area to quell long-standing racial tensions between white farm owners and black farm workers.
