Boult took four wickets as Chennai – in a stage four wickets down with just three runs scored – he was restricted to 114 for nine of his 20 overs.
Kishan then hit 68 and De Kock 46 as Mumbai accelerated to 116 in 12.2 overs without losing a wicket.
It was Mumbai ‘s first 10 wicket victory over Chennai and the first time MS Dhoni’s Chennai has lost by such a margin.
Dhoni admitted that the win “hurt.”
Mumbai topped the IPL standings, while three-time champion Chennai was left late in the eight-team race amid mounting questions about the future of Dhoni and other veterans on the team.
New Zealander Boult eliminated Chennai starter Ruturaj Gaikwad, who took Shane Watson’s place for the day, with just five balls left in the game.
Jasprit Bumrah claimed Ambati Rayudu and Narayan Jagadeesan with back-to-back balls in the second over before Boult took the wicket off Faf du Plessis in the third.
Dhoni made 16, hitting a six before being caught on the next ball by Rahul Chahar.
As more ground fell, Sam Curran saved Chennai from total disaster with a challenging 52 that pushed his team away from its historic low of 79.
Boult, who took four for 18 of his four overs, said he kept his “natural” swing bowling style.
“I was lucky to make the first change, if he is going to tour here, it will be up front.”
Chennai beat Mumbai in the season opener, moved to empty stadiums in the United Arab Emirates due to the coronavirus pandemic in India, but Dhoni admitted that nothing has gone right since.
They have now lost eight of their 11 games.
“What you have to see is what are the things that go wrong, especially this year. It has not been our year, whether you lose by eight or ten wickets, it does not matter, but where we are at this stage of the tournament, it hurts”, He said.
“As long as you are not doing well, there may be 100 reasons, but one of the main things you ask yourself is whether you have played to the potential that you have no matter the conditions,” added Dhoni.
“And this year we haven’t. Cumulatively there have been batting failures.”
Dhoni said Chennai now needs a “clear picture” for the 2021 season for which many questions remain due to the consequences of the pandemic.
“The next three games will be an ideal opportunity to give platforms. See some of the young people in preparation for next year, see who hits and who throws to death and soaks the pressure,” added the captain, who retired a few . weeks ago from international cricket and who also faces new doubts about his future.
