D Food announced that it will resume delivery of restaurant food to South Africans beginning Friday, May 1, 2020.

“On April 29, 2020, the relaxation of restaurant-related regulations was announced during the national shutdown, allowing South Africa’s favorite food delivery brand, Mr. D Food, to resume operations from Friday. May 1, 2020, “the company said.

In accordance with level 4 restrictions, food delivery will only be allowed between 09:00 and 20:00.

D Food CEO Devin Sinclair said D Food would also continue to deliver convenience store food and pharmacy essentials in the future.

“As a South African brand, we are proud to offer a crucial service during closure to ensure that we are all doing our part to support government initiatives to promote social distancing,” said Sinclair.

“Delivering from restaurants, convenience stores and MediRite Checkers pharmacies on the platform is just one of the ways we support South Africans during the closing period and at the same time make sure they can stay indoors.”

Devastating impact

D Food said that, like the rest of the restaurant industry, the shutdown has been hit hard.

“Opening restaurants for food delivery will allow D Food and restaurants to try to recover from the devastating impact of 5 weeks of closing on all businesses,” the company said.

He added that he hopes to facilitate a revenue stream to restaurants across the country that have been adversely affected by the blockade.

“We will also implement initiatives to support the restaurant industry as they reopen,” Sinclair said. “As a first step, we are introducing a commission relief plan that reduces commission rates for the vast majority of our restaurant partners.”

“We have also allocated marketing funds to drive promotional initiatives to generate orders and revenue for neighborhood restaurants.”

Mr D Food will offer a new feature that will allow customers to donate COVID-19 directly to their favorite restaurants by placing an order in the app.

“We believe that by working together with the industry we can help give restaurants the opportunity to begin to recover from the financial effects of the blockade,” said Sinclair.

Uber eats unconfirmed

Uber Eats works similarly to Mr D Food and is its main competitor in the South African market.

MyBroadband asked Uber Eats if it could confirm that it would resume operations starting May 1, and said it would make an announcement “in due course.”

“As announced by the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Ebrahim Patel, on April 25, 2020, food delivery in South Africa is authorized to operate daily from May 1, 2020 at restricted hours from 09:00 to 20: 00, during Level 4 of the National Blockade, “said a Uber Eats spokesperson.

“We are working to better understand the detailed restrictions set by the government regarding food delivery and we will announce our measures in due course.”

“The health and safety of our community come first, and we will do our best to support our community and small businesses during these unprecedented times,” the company said.
