Durban – A top ANC leader in Mpumalanga province was arrested for the rape of his eight-year-old twin daughters.

The suspect is a provincial executive member of the ANC Mpumalanga. He was arrested on Monday morning and is currently in police custody awaiting appearance before the Nelspruit Magistrates Court.

Independent Media knows his name and the name of the suburb where the rape allegedly took place, but due to ethical considerations, he cannot be identified as it would identify the victims.

The ANC issued a statement on the matter and released his full name and current and former positions in the party.

He was previously charged with raping a 26-year-old woman in 2012, but the NPA dropped the charges against him in Wynberg Magistrates Court.

At that time, the court was informed that the director of the Public Ministry had decided not to prosecute the suspect after examining the case file.

In the statement, the ANC in Mpumalanga said that the man who once served in the National Assembly before returning to the province to serve as MEC, has since been suspended in accordance with the ANC’s stance on members facing accusations and serious charges.

“(He) was arrested on Monday, September 28, 2020 at his home for allegedly raping his two daughters and will appear before the Nelspruit Court of First Instance on a date to be determined by the authorities …

“(He) has been summarily suspended as a member of the ANC and PEC until the case is concluded by the competent courts of the country in accordance with the resolutions of the most recent meeting of the ANC National Executive Committee and the 54th National Conference, which ruled that all members accused of corruption and other serious crimes should withdraw from all activities associated with the ANC, ”the party said in a statement Monday.

In addition, the ANC said that it supported the victims and had assured them that it will do everything possible to see justice done.

“We also want to let you know that the government led by the ANC has established different institutions to support victims of rape and all kinds of gender violence and they should feel free to approach those institutions.”
