José Mourinho told Football London that he made a ‘good decision’ by leaving Gareth Bale on the Tottenham Hotspur bench yesterday.
Bale’s second Spurs debut was highly anticipated and many observers felt that Mourinho was going to throw the Welshman from the start against West Ham.
However, Bale remained on the bench and his return to Tottenham didn’t exactly have a fairy tale ending.
Bale came in with Spurs 3-0 up and crossing against West Ham, but the game eventually ended up ending 3-3.
In fact, Bale had a chance to seal all three points for the Spurs, but fired his wide shot when he was well placed.
And Mourinho said: “It is a pity that he could not score that fourth goal which was a beauty and would have killed the game. But that’s football.
“The decision not to start it was a good decision. A decision to show that you don’t have a beautiful chair waiting for you on your computer and that you sit there the first time you can. It was a message for the team that in this team everyone has to fight for positions.
“He is very well accepted in the group. Everyone likes it, and I think he likes what he found here too. So everything is positive and the attention was not on him. “
It remains to be seen how long Bale will wait for his first outing in the Tottenham jersey.
Tottenham have a Europa League match against LASK to play on Thursday, which will be Bale’s next chance to play for his new team.
