The Spurs boss feels he was not given enough time to implement his project during his time at Old Trafford
José Mourinho believes he could stay at Tottenham for the long haul after feeling like he wasn’t giving enough time to put together his Manchester United project.
Mourinho, who recently celebrated a year at the helm of Spurs after replacing Mauricio Pochettino last season, has Tottenham flying high to start the 2020-21 season.
Spurs are in first place in the Premier League on goal difference over Liverpool, and the two teams will meet in a clash at the top of the table on Wednesday.
Mourinho joined Spurs 11 months after being fired at Manchester United, leaving the club after two and a half years in office.
After experiencing rapid success with various clubs early in his career, Mourinho said United was a long-term project that he felt was prematurely cut short when he was fired.
“At a certain period in my career, with a club profile that I was taking in hand, we didn’t need that long to be successful,” said Mourinho.
“We did it in Porto, Inter, Real [Madrid]Chelsea, both times we did it without that need for that longevity and also my desire to try different things and my crazy desire to go to many countries, and try to win it, and try to get different experiences in many different countries. It was perfect because it was about winning, and goodbye, and let’s try something else.
“The first club where I felt I needed time and they didn’t give me time was at Manchester United, because I felt that I left in the middle of the process, but I learn very early to respect decisions, which I did at United.
“We did what we did, we did what was possible and we kept going. I am happy, they are happy and we have a great relationship, which is something that I am very proud to always say, when I leave the clubs.” I have a very good relationship with everyone and United is one more example of that. “
Mourinho has been a coach for more than 20 years, achieving great success almost everywhere he has been. Now 57, he said he can see himself at Spurs for the long haul.
“Now, at Tottenham, I know the job profile I have in my hands, and hopefully so far I’m really enjoying being at the club, I think the club is happy to work with me, so I see myself staying for a long time, but if we can accelerate the process, as if we are accelerating it, and doing good things as we are doing, of course we are not going to waste time, “said Mourinho.
