Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga has said that it is important that teachers do not inadvertently mistreat students.
This after a viral video showed a teacher forcefully combing students’ hair at a school in Gauteng.
According to the Gauteng Department of Education, the incident occurred at Fundulwazi High School in Sedibeng West.
The teacher in the video is seen roughly combing the hair of a leaning student. She is heard yelling “next”, calling another student and asking where her comb was.
Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi retweeted the video, asking for it to be verified.
Gauteng education department spokesman Steve Mabona said officials visited the school on Tuesday to obtain more details about the incident, while an investigation was under way.
In a statement Wednesday, Motshekga said: “While the incident is regrettable, it is critical to ensure that the school’s Code of Conduct as specified in the South African Schools Act is adhered to at all times, but also that teachers do not inadvertently mistreat apprentices. “

He added that in terms of section 8 (4) of the law, each school had a binding Code of Conduct for both students and teachers, and said Lesufi’s department was investigating the incident.
Motshekga said the department had clear guidelines regarding a school’s Code of Conduct for both teachers and students.
“The school governing body of this particular school, as our trusted shareholder representing parents, will be involved in dealing with the matter. We await the results of the Gauteng MEC’s investigations on education on this matter,” he added.
The video has left social media users divided, with some viewing it as the teacher disciplining students, while others argued that it was humiliating.
This is not funny. It’s abusive and reminds me of how white schools say black hair is messy and never clean. We don’t see them cutting / brushing the hair of white people, particularly white children, although some have fringes on their large foreheads. Very unpleasant .
