JOHANNESBURG – After the Department of the Interior was blamed for the deaths of several people at the Beitbridge border post, Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said Wednesday that most of the victims died before the congestion.
The minister gave an update on immigration and border law enforcement issues under level 3 lockdown regulations.
Travelers seeking to enter Zimbabwe spent most of the past week at the port of entry in lines of several kilometers.
At least five people died, which the Freight Forwarding Association (RFA) attributed to a lack of water, heating and other conditions at the border.
Motsoaledi said, however, that some of those who died were not from the trucking industry.
“The other deaths occurred long before the increased activity associated with the Christmas season. Of course there was some mortality, which had nothing to do with truck driving, which, as I said, occurs throughout the year ”, said the minister.
“This month it happened on December 8, 13, 14 and 22. It was long before the congestion period, ”he added.
