The 56-year-old won a domestic treble with the Brazilians last season and it is now understood that he left his post to join Al Ahly.
Pitso Mosimane has reportedly resigned as head coach of the Mamelodi Sundowns just weeks after winning his fifth PSL title with the club.
According to SowetanLIVE, the Kagiso-born mentor could be on his way to Egypt’s Al Ahly or the Moroccan giant Wydad Casablanca.
The news is surprising because Mosimane recently committed his future to the Brazilians after signing a new four-year contract.
Before signing the deal, the former Bafana mentor Bafana revealed that he had offers from North African teams, some of which Sundowns played in the Caf Champions League.
However, he promised to stay at Sundowns as long as possible and his reasons were that “he loves the club and the fans loved him.
And his latest success with the Brazilians showed that Mosimane’s heart was still in the club.
It is unclear at this time what prompted Mosimane’s resignation, especially since the coach previously said his delay in renewing his contract with Sundowns was not about the money.
Further, PowerFM Sport reports that Mosimane will be leaving with Rhulani Mokwena and fitness trainer Kabelo Ragoaga, after Al Ahly reportedly agreed to bring three people with him to join his backroom staff.
It is understood that Al Ahly is willing to pay compensation for Sundowns to release Mosimane from his contract.
This means that Manqoba Mngqithi would be the only man left from the three-man technical team.
The Gauteng-based commercial radio station further revealed that José Ramón Alexanko is Patrice Motsepe’s preferred choice to replace Mosimane with Mngqithi as his assistant.
If the move materializes, Mosimane would leave South Africa the most successful coach of the PSL era.
He has won every trophy on offer since beginning his coaching career with SuperSport United more than two decades ago.
Mosimane recently won his fifth league title and the Sundowns’ 10th in the PSL era, subsequently surpassing the late Ted Dumitru, Gordon Igesund and Gavin Hunt, who have four league titles under their belt.
He is also the only South African coach to win the Caf Champions League and the Caf Super Cup; That’s when the Sundowns dominated African soccer in 2016 and 2017.
Mosimane has won 11 major trophies with the Chloorkop team during his eight-year tenure.
