The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach has approached what would be his second continental crown

Al-Ahly’s new manager Pitso Mosimane led his team to a 2-0 victory over Wydad Casablanca in a Caf Champions League first leg semi-final match at Stade Mohamed V on Saturday.

The tone was set as early as the fourth minute when Mohamed Kafsha took advantage of a mistake by Yahya Jabrane to put the visitors in front against a Wydad Casablanca team that was champions in 2017 and is also led by a former Sundowns coach, Miguel Angel Gamondi. .

The Moroccan team had a great chance to reestablish parity when they were awarded a penalty in the 43rd minute, but the opportunity was wasted when Badi Aouk meekly scored his penalty and allowed Mohamed El Shenawy to make the save.

Al Ahly closed the victory when Ali Maaloul scored a penalty in the 63rd minute.

Known as ‘the club of the century’, the Egyptian team aims to extend their Champions League win record from eight to nine.

Meanwhile, Mosimane is looking to claim his second Caf Champions League crown after his success with South African Mamelodi Sundowns in 2016.

In fact, the Sundowns were eliminated from this season’s Champions League by Al Ahly in the quarters, losing 3-1 on aggregate to the Cairo team.

That was before Mosimane’s trade to the Egyptian giants, and now he seems keen to make the most of his second shot for the crown after a solid victory Saturday night in Morocco.

The return match will take place on Friday 23 October in Cairo. The other semifinal will be played between Raja Casablanca and Zamalek and the first leg will be played on Sunday, October 18 in the Moroccan capital.

Ahly and Wydad met in the Caf CL final in 2017, with each club participating in a subsequent final since then.

Wydad last missed the title after Esperance were declared champions after a controversial final overshadowed by a VAR scandal, and the Tunisians also defeated Ahly 4-3 on aggregate the previous year.
