CAPE TOWN – More than 200 Golden Arrow buses are attacked each month.
At a recent meeting of the permanent transport committee of the provincial government, it was revealed that between six and eight robberies were committed weekly, many of them on buses, while in other cases vehicles were shot and petrol tanks were bombed.
Recently, 12 Golden Arrow bus coaches have been attacked, resulting in economic losses of just under R 29 million.
Buses are often seen as soft targets and are often bombarded with gasoline or stoned during protests.
Last week, three vehicles were set on fire during protests in the Khayelitsha area.
Committee chair Daylin Mitchell said they needed specific details on whether arrests or convictions had been secured.
“This is a huge concern given the reasons for residents to enjoy safe and reliable transportation and that the Western Cape government subsidizes GABS operations.”
Western Cape government officials had stressed the need for increased security.
The city of Cape Town and Golden Arrow are trying.
Months ago, the city had dispatched law enforcement officers on the buses, but given the frequency of attacks, it is clear that more needs to be done.
