CAPE TOWN – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Western Cape has stepped up deployments in the Ocean View area of Cape Town following sporadic incidents of shootings, public violence, attacks and property damage related to the conflict between bands in conflict in the area. Late on Saturday, the SAPS said in the province.
A 25-year-old man was shot dead and his brother wounded when three suspects shot them late Saturday afternoon, SAPS Western Cape spokesman Brig. Novela Potelwa said in a statement Sunday.
Later on Saturday night, a large group of men apparently responding to the shooting incident, set fire to two vehicles at 7 p.m. near the scene of the shooting. The group also reportedly chased another man who had to jump from his home window while fleeing from his attackers. An informal home was also damaged during the attacks, Potelwa said.
A 23-year-old suspect, who was part of the group, was detained after he was found with a homemade firearm (zip line) and ammunition. Meanwhile, two people were being questioned by detectives in connection with the shooting incident. A 19-year-old was arrested in connection with one of the two burning vehicles.
Ocean View detectives were investigating murder, attempted murder and malicious property damage cases. Members of the SAPS anti-gang unit, members of the tactical response team, law enforcement police, and additional detectives were deployed to the area to monitor the outbreaks and track down suspects.
“The area is relatively quiet at the moment as the police continue to monitor the situation,” Potelwa said.
