JOHANNESBURG – As South Africa rebuilds the country and society in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, President Cyril Ramaphosa said more efforts were needed to include people living with disabilities.
In his weekly bulletin published Monday morning, the president said he did not want to simply return the economy to where it was before the COVID-19 crisis, but hoped to build a more inclusive and transformed one.
President Cyril Ramaphosa said that while the pandemic had caused great hardship for everyone in South Africa, the impact had been particularly severe for many people with disabilities.
Movement restrictions during confinement, along with pressure on health care facilities, made daily life even more difficult for those living with disabilities.
Many spent weeks and even months in isolation.
The president said that as the country now focuses on improving the economy through the economic recovery and reconstruction plan, more needs to be done to create equal opportunities for people with disabilities.
