More farm workers than farmers have been attacked and killed in KwaZulu-Natal in the past two decades.
Provincial Community Security MEC Bheki Ntuli revealed this in a written response to the district attorney’s questions about violent crimes on KwaZulu-Natal farms.
Ntuli revealed that 206 murders had been recorded since 2000. Of these, 119 were agricultural workers and 87 were farmers. During this period, 752 attacks on farms were recorded, of which 380 were attacks on agricultural workers.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, of those 380 cases, almost a quarter involved rape.
The full answer to the questions is available here.
The party said the figures show urgent interventions are needed to stem the wave of violence against rural and agricultural communities.
“The district attorney is deeply concerned by this staggeringly high number, which presents a bleak outlook for female farm workers. Equally alarming is that of all the cases reported since 2000, only 21 out of 88 ended in conviction. This worrying statistic is an accusation against justice and the fight against gender violence, “said Chris Pappas, party spokesman on agriculture and rural development.
Of the 752 cases of attacks on farms, only 56 have resulted in a conviction. One third of these (251) took place in the Ugu district.
