Three more people were arrested, and two again arrested, in connection with a controversial R56m tender to mark police vehicles.
This means that there have already been 41 arrests related to the scandal.
SAPS spokesman Col. Athlenda Mathe said the three arrests were made on Friday. On the same day, two others were arrested again for perjury.
Those arrested on Friday include a colonel, an administrative employee within SAPS ‘supply chain management (SCM) division and three civilians. All five face a variety of charges including fraud, corruption, money laundering and perjury, ”said Mathe.
He said that two civilians arrested again had been initially arrested in June and appeared before the Pretoria trial court, where they were released on bail of 5,000 rand.
“The couple has been detained again after due diligence was carried out by the Directorate of Investigations which found that the couple lied under oath about having no prior convictions. They have been re-arrested and each faces an additional charge of perjury, fraud, and failure to disclose prior convictions in violation of section 60 (11B) of the Criminal Procedure Act.
“The possibility of further arrests in this case cannot be ruled out,” he said.
The five are expected to appear in Pretoria magistrates court on Monday to request a formal bond.
“The Investigations Directorate is stepping up its efforts to hold those who orchestrated and participated in the looting of the system to account,” said defender Hermione Cronje, head of the NPA Investigations Directorate.
