Montana said Mkhize’s statement was misdirected.
“You should direct your anger towards the chairman of the commission [of inquiry into state capture, deputy chief justice Raymond] Zondo and not me, ”he said.
Montana said it had submitted a full statement to Zondo on October 25 in preparation for his testimony at a date yet to be determined.
“However, it became clear that certain members of the media had access to the statement before the persons involved could be notified. I drew the commission’s attention to this and made it clear that the Zondo commission’s conduct in leaking my statement is ‘unethical and illegal.’
Montana indicated that she felt Mkhize’s response was false. He said he never claimed that Mkhize or the ANC “had designated people to receive and channel money on behalf of the ANC, from the Prasa Swifambo tender.”
Montana said it was on record having stated that there was no corruption or any form of bid fraud in the award of Prasa to Swifambo Rail Leasing. He said neither the ANC nor Gomes, who secured a R40m portion of the R3.5bn Swifambo contract, had any role in the process.
“Dr. Zweli Mkhize deliberately avoids addressing the real problem, which is that Maria [her husband] Carlos Gomes was involved in fundraising for the ANC and that he, in his capacity as general treasurer of the ANC, had visited Gomes’ home in Johannesburg several times.
“I was present on some of these occasions when he came looking for money, claiming it was for the 2014 ANC election campaign.”
Montana said Mkhize had to clarify why he would demand money and provide an account to Maria Gomes if the ANC “did not designate people to receive and channel money on behalf of the ANC.”
“I look forward to Dr. Zweli Mkhize’s appropriate answers to these questions in the Zondo commission.”
