CAPE TOWN – Former Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor Mongameli Bobani has been described as a dedicated servant of the town.
Bobani was buried in Port Elizabeth on Friday after he died last week from a COVID-19 infection. He was admitted to St. George Hospital for three weeks.
Bobani’s funeral was held at the Feather Market Center.
The leader of the United Democratic Movement (UDM), Bantu Holomisa, addressed the mourners and said that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Bobani was always committed to helping people.
“We are talking about a leader who enjoyed helping people. Even the way he contracted COVID-19 was a testament to his desire to help because he was busy working on the ground to help with service delivery issues, ”said Holomisa.
Holomisa said that for nearly 17 years, Bobani served as a councilor in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro.
“Honestly, he did not care where the citizens of this municipality lived. Either under the tutelage of the ANC or the district attorney, I would start working, “he said.
At the time of his death, Bobani served on the mayoral committee overseeing the infrastructure and engineering department.
BOBANI ACCUSED OF ABUSE OF POWER
Meanwhile, it is alleged that Bobani used his position within the Nelson Mandela Bay metro to control decision-making in allegedly dubious acquisition processes.
Nine people appeared in court on Friday on charges of fraud, money laundering, corruption and violation of the Municipal Financial Management Law.
This was related to the corruption of tenders worth about R73 million.
