JOHANNESBURG – National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise is reflecting on a request from the Democratic Alliance (DA) to convene an urgent debate on the country’s coronavirus vaccination plan.

The party made the request following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s speech on Monday night, calling for the session to take place before the end of 2020.

The year comes to an end at midnight.

While there is a mad fight by countries around the world to gain access to COVID-19 vaccines, the African National Congress government has come under fire for its approach.

For many, there is simply too much uncertainty due to the delay in payments to the WHO Covax program and the lack of a clear implementation plan.

The district attorney hopes that the National Assembly will take up the matter; a request said by Parliament’s spokesman, Moloto Mothapo Mothapo, was still under consideration.

“You are currently applying your mind to the request and will make a determination based on the various factors provided in the rules for scheduling such discussions. Once the process has concluded, he will communicate with the chief prosecutor and the public. “

As Modise ponders the request, some have accused the district attorney of jumping the gun, questioning what the party expected to happen after the debate.

South Africa expects to receive the vaccine in the first quarter of 2021, with priority given to healthcare professionals, essential service workers and the sick.
