The Umkhonto we Sizwe Military Veterans Association (MKMVA) has called on the ANC to reach a resolution on the plight of its “sick and unemployed” members.

On Monday, a group of MKMVA members took the N12 highway, east of Johannesburg, to draw the attention of the ruling party.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) spokesman Kobeli Mokheseng said the group blocked roads with cars, minibuses, taxis and trucks.

“The protest occurred between 5 am and 6:30 am. Motorized vehicles were purposely abandoned to prevent other motorists from accessing the roads, ”Mokheseng said.

He said the highway was cleared later and traffic was flowing.

“We managed to remove the vehicles and we are monitoring the situation,” Mokheseng said.

MKMVA spokesperson Kebby Maphatsoe said the protest was part of the association’s massive action that began in KwaZulu-Natal two weeks ago.

“The protests will continue and will spread to other parts of the country. This is due to the difficult situation of the ex-combatants. The comrades are unhappy, ”Maphatsoe told TimesLIVE on Monday.

“The comrades are dying. Some are sick but cannot take their medicine. They have told me that the medication makes them hungry and that they have no food. Some say they’d rather stop taking the medication and die. “
