The national council Umkhonto we Sizwe has come out strongly against Tony Yengeni, accusing him of not leading the unity project in the ANC.
At a press conference Thursday, MK’s council general secretary Gregory Nthatisi criticized Yengeni for failing in his role as chairman of the party’s peace and stability subcommittee, which was tasked with pushing unity in the party. .
“The ANC NEC gave that responsibility [to unite the ANC] to the NEC Peace Subcommittee led by Comrade Tony Yengeni to facilitate our unity. So far, Comrade Tony Yengeni has proven incapable of leading that project or deliberately changing it due to his bias, ”Nthatisi said.
He said Yengeni had been seen addressing a meeting of the radical economic transformation faction in the ANC and that Yengeni worked to distort the ANC’s political positions in favor of populism.
Yengeni reportedly told President Cyril Ramaphosa to lead by example and resign from the party at a national ANC working committee last month on the issue of CR17 campaign funds.
The meeting was in the run-up to a directive from the national executive committee that resolved to ask members accused of corruption to withdraw from their posts.
.
Nthatisi also criticized former President Jacob Zuma for his letter criticizing Ramaphosa, in response to a previous one from Ramaphosa about corruption in the ANC.
He called Zuma’s response a pointless spiel and welcomed the ANC NEC’s decision to support Ramaphosa’s stance on corruption.
