The team’s eBafana Bafana was mixed on the first day of the inaugural FIFA eNations Stay and Play Cup, pitting some of the world’s best players playing the world’s best footballers.

FIFA with its partner Electronic Arts (EA Sports) has created an online competition for nations during the blockade that affects most countries whose competitions have been suspended.

The South African team, known as eBafana Bafana, consists of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns player Sibusiso Vilakazi, Proteas fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, musician Cassper Nyovest and player Thabo Moloi.

The South Africans faced off with the United Arab Emirates on Day 1. Moloi defeated Talal Fahad 8-2, but Sibusiso Vilakazi fell 6-4 against Abdullah Ramadan.

The FIFA eNations Stay and Play Cup is designed to encourage players and fans to stay home during the Covid-19 pandemic, and South Africa is one of the countries invited by the world governing body to participate. This is also done to support the World Health Organization (WHO) in its fight against the coronavirus.

The tournament has 40 nations divided into three sections by time zone and the central section with 25 countries from Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The winners of each section will win a money donation award given to their chosen national charity fighting Covid-19. With its long-standing association with the SA Football Association (Safa), the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (NMCF) has been chosen as the charity of choice for South Africa.
