Cape Town – Stellenbosch University (SU) announced that a missing engineering student was found dead in an empty section of one of the university’s residences on Friday.
Ashwill Boer, a 25-year-old student from Worcester, was reported missing earlier in the week and, according to social media posts, was last seen on Sunday, November 1.
University Vice Chancellor: Learning and Teaching, Professor Arnold Schoonwinkel said Boer “was found dead in his residence today after he disappeared a few days ago. Foul play is not suspected. ”
“It was found in a part of the residence that has been evacuated due to Covid-19 isolation. It is not busy at the moment.
“As a university community, we are deeply saddened by this loss and wish to convey our deepest condolences to grieving family, friends, and fellow students during this time of grief,” said Schoonwinkel.
According to Schoonwinkel, staff from his Division of Student Affairs are in contact with the family and will meet the students at the residence this afternoon.
“We also ask everyone to respect the privacy of Mr. Boer’s loved ones and classmates traumatized by this event.”
According to police spokesman Andre Traut: “The circumstances surrounding the death of a 25-year-old man are being investigated after his body was discovered in a student residence on Marais Stellenbosch Street this afternoon. The man was reported. as missing after his last time on Monday.
“A death investigation case file has been registered and no crime is suspected at this stage,” Traut said.
Stellenbosch University has encouraged students and staff who have been affected by his death to accept the counseling offered on the varsity team.
