James milner He says Liverpool has to “kick” in 2021 after two disappointing draws United manchester Breathing down their necks at the top of the Premier League.
Defending champions Jurgen Klopp are heading into the New Year with a three-point lead despite losing points to wrestlers West Brom and Newcastle.
Archrival United, who have lost just four points since November 1, would level the points with the leaders if they beat Aston Villa on Friday.
Liverpool, who have played one more game than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, are next in action on Monday at Southampton.
“I think it’s positive (Liverpool are at the top), but it seems like no one wants to take it by the neck at the moment,” Milner told Liverpoolfc.com.
“We have lost points, everyone seems to be losing points. United have had a good run and are probably the only team that is having a career together.
“It’s important that we have to start now and try to get some 3s.”
Liverpool have already lost as many points in 16 games this season as they did in the entire previous season, when they were proclaimed English champions for the first time in 30 years.
Last season, Klopp’s team didn’t lose a league game until February 29, having won all but one of their games, against United, up to that point.
The unique circumstances of the 2020/21 campaign, with the lack of a proper preseason and a compressed schedule as a result of the coronavirus, meant that Liverpool’s runaway success was never likely to be repeated.
But Milner accepts that they still could have done better despite his defensive injury crisis.
“There are points we have lost this season where we think we could have done better, but being in the mix heading into the New Year is good, especially with the problems we have,” he said.
“But we are a quality squad of players who have been together for a long time and are used to winning.
“We are disappointed that we did not get the three points (at Newcastle), but we want to get back on the winning track as soon as possible.”
