Former military veterans are seeking a one-time payment, presidential pardons, jobs in state entities and housing, it emerged after a meeting this week.

This comes after Ramaphosa chaired a meeting between a group of fighting military veterans, which included members of the Umkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association, the Azanian People’s Liberation Army, and the Azanian National Liberation Army, and a task force that he appointed on the matter.

The task force is led by Vice President David Mabuza. It was formed after the group marched on Durban in November and later delivered a memorandum of demands to the presidency.

The group wants a single payment for their contribution to the fight, presidential pardons for its members, jobs in state entities and housing, among other things.

“The task force has held a series of high-level discussions since November 11 to resolve matters of grave concern related to the well-being of military veterans. These issues were raised by military veterans in a memorandum submitted to the presidency on November 10, “Ramaphosa spokesman Tyron Seale said in a statement.

“[Tuesday’s] The meeting reflected on the progress made through discussions to date. While consensus has been reached on several critical points, discussions and compromises will continue to resolve outstanding issues.

“President Ramaphosa praised the constructive and principled manner in which military veterans raised their concerns and assured them that these issues will be resolved,” said Seale.

He said Ramaphosa stressed that more work needs to be done and that engagement must continue on some of the issues raised.

Veterans’ spokesperson Lwazi Mzobe confirmed that Tuesday’s meeting resolved a number of issues, including the possibility of presidential pardons for its members.

He said the meeting also discussed the issue of scholarships for veterans and burial plans.

“We are happy [about progress made] but not 100%, because there are certain problems that we never solved. But the good thing is that the door has never been closed, “he said.

Mzobe said they will continue to collaborate with the task force to resolve outstanding issues.
