DURBAN – Two men were killed in a plane crash in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, paramedics said Saturday.

Netcare 911 paramedics responded at 12:34 pm Saturday afternoon to reports of a plane crash on the D534 in Howick in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands region, Netcare 911 spokesperson Shawn Herbst said in a statement.

“Reports from the scene indicate that the pilot and passenger, both elderly gentlemen, had suffered fatal injuries. The patients were evaluated on the spot and pronounced deceased by a Netcare 911 emergency physician,” Herbst said.

INVESTIGATION

Investigators have been dispatched by the Accident and Incident Investigation Division to begin the information gathering process that will help establish the cause or causes of a fatal plane crash that occurred at Hilton in KwaZulu-Natal.

Initial reports indicate that the aircraft, with two people on board, crashed moments after takeoff fatally injuring both occupants. The plane, which is a light sports plane called Bushbaby, had taken off from Eva’s Field, an airstrip in Hilton, and was heading for Umkomaas Airfield, which is located on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

The evidence gathering phase, which has already started and will continue on site, will define the size and scope of the investigation, as well as the expected time frame for the completion of a final accident investigation report.

It is vitally important to note that investigations can vary in complexity and can sometimes take a while to complete.

However, if a critical safety issue is identified during the course of the investigation, the investigation team will immediately notify the relevant parties so that appropriate action can be taken.

A preliminary report will be issued within 30 days of the day of this accident.
