The numbers don’t lie: Microsoft has the most powerful console in the new era of gaming. One of the running jokes in the last generation of games was how the original Xbone was regularly outperformed by the PS5, offering less profitability in the visual department. For the Xbox Series X, Microsoft went out of their way and designed a console of monolithic proportions that had all the horror floppy disks and other fancy tech that my Pacific Rim-obsessed brain just can’t parse.
That doesn’t mean the PlayStation 5 is not far behind either! There is a lot of cutting edge technology within its own framework, but at the same time there is a definite gap between the two consoles when it comes to technical specs. So why does the PS5 match and sometimes even improve the Xbox Series X? According to the technical experts at Digital Foundry, the PS5 offers more details and frames in games like Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and Dirt 5.
Additional research from The Verge suggests that because developers received their Xbox dev kits later than the PS5 and were also only allowed to submit their games for certification as of June, they had to catch up. However, Microsoft is not taking this seriously and says that it is working to close the gap with the PS5.
“We are aware of performance issues on a handful of Xbox Series X | S optimized titles and are actively working with our partners to identify and resolve issues to ensure an optimal experience,” a Microsoft spokesperson told The Verge.
As we begin a new generation of consoles, our partners are only now scratching the surface of what next-gen consoles can do and minor bug fixes are expected as they learn to get the most out of our new platform. We look forward to continuing to work with developers to further explore the capabilities of Xbox Series X | Yes in the future.
With that said, you can’t go wrong with either console. The quick review of the Xbox Series X is that it’s a brilliant bucket for junk food gaming binges, perhaps too comfortable in its own skin, but still performs solidly. The PS5, on the other hand, is what I would call the next-gen wow factor. You see the part, you feel the part with your Dualsense controller, and games like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales sell that technology wonderfully.
