Michael Owen has questioned Tottenham Hotspur’s title credentials on MatchDay Live, which was broadcast by Premier League productions last night.
Tottenham are currently leading the way in the Premier League, after beating Manchester City 2-0 at the weekend.
José Mourinho’s men received much praise for their performance against City, as they faced with ease everything that Pep Guardiola’s men had to throw at them.
But Owen feels Mourinho’s tactical style may take off as the season progresses.
“I think the two teams that immediately pop into your mind and that could challenge Liverpool and City dominance are Chelsea and Tottenham,” he said.
“But if you ask me what my favor is, I would say Chelsea right now.
“As much as Tottenham impressed me yesterday, you can’t have so little possession and sit back and win the Premier League.
“I know Leicester did it, but I’m not sure these players have the full faith of their coach, let’s say.
“Under Pochettino that team would be in the lead in every game, ‘come on, I support you, I think you’re a brilliant team, I think you’re the best team, get out there.’
“All of a sudden, that same group of players, if they were playing, they would be thinking ‘Does the coach like me?’
“In fact, we’re sitting now, conceding possession, does the coach believe in us so much? I know our last manager did. I don’t think you can win a title like this. “
Whether Owen’s claim will come true is likely to be found in the coming weeks.
Tottenham face matches against Chelsea, Arsenal, Leicester City and Liverpool in the near future, and if Mourinho’s side can still remain at the top of the pile after those matches, they will surely have to be taken seriously.
Despite all Owen’s doubts, Tottenham has been tremendously impressive this season.
The Spurs have been lethal on the fast break, and they also seem to have become more stable on defense lately, which has helped them accelerate up the board and into first place.
