  • After six years of investigation, the police announced on Monday the evolution of five arrests. Among those arrested is the person believed to have pulled the trigger.
  • More arrests are expected, Police Minister Bheki Cele said.

Six years after his alleged murder, the family of former Bafana goalkeeper Bafana Senzo Meyiwa are delighted with the progress in police investigations, although they will never be able to bring their son back.

Police Minister Bheki Cele announced on Monday that five arrests had been made.

The minister was briefing the nation together with the commissioner of the national police, General Khehla Sitole, where he said:

“The SAPS and the NPA (National Tax Authority) are confident that we have an airtight case against the five suspects. At this point, we cannot reveal any further information as investigations are still ongoing and further arrests cannot be ruled out.”

Among those arrested is the individual believed to have pulled the trigger.

Meyiwa’s death was shot to death in the Vosloorus home of his girlfriend, actress and musician Kelly Khumalo, on October 26, 2014, exactly six years ago.

Senzo’s brother Siyabonga said: “We have been waiting for this day for more than six years exactly today when the perpetrators of this crime will be put on the books.”

“We would have loved to have celebrated this at father [father] presence too. Unfortunately, he passed away and he was a very bitter man because nothing had happened, but we are still grateful that something finally happened. “

Siyabonga told News24 that although the family had given up hope that justice would ultimately prevail.

More consistency

Senzo’s mother was also elated by the news, although she was unfortunately unable to speak to the media at this time, he added.

Siyabonga said there were a couple of outstanding issues, however, including the payment of money to Senzo’s children.

He added that the family was confident that the authorities were on the right track.

“It seems that all the forces are working together. Even before, we knew there was an imminent arrest and all of a sudden the police found someone else. I think now there is a bit more coherence between the SAPS and the National Prosecutor’s Office.

“Obviously if you’re going to get a big fish it’s not easy and it looks like they’ve been getting big fish out of this.”

The arrested suspects are expected to appear in Boksburg Magistrates Court on Tuesday and the family is expected to be present.

Siyabonga said there would also be an AfriForum briefing with Meyiwa’s other brother, Sifiso, in attendance.

Weapon

Cele is also expected to meet with family representatives.

Siyabonga said there were many positives to the matter, including Safa erecting a tombstone, which also brought happiness to the family.

During the press conference, Sitole said that one of the people arrested was believed to have pulled the trigger.

Three of those arrested may not have been at the home where Meyiwa was killed, added Sitole, who said different investigative tactics should be used and a cold case analysis should be conducted.

Sitole also announced that the weapon, which was used that day, had been found and the police connected it to the scene.
