The high-speed unit of the Gauteng traffic police arrested more than 70 sprinters for reckless and negligent driving on the roads of the province.
Gauteng traffic spokesman, Seal Maremane, said the sprinters had been arrested during high-speed operations carried out on major provincial routes since the beginning of the month.
The highest speed recorded was Thursday night when a 27-year-old man was caught driving a Mercedes-Benz E 200 at 215 km / h on the N1 north on Botha Avenue.
In another incident the same day, a 35-year-old man was arrested on the R21 motorway in Irene after traveling 204 km / h in a Range Rover Sport.
Maremane said the driver claimed he was rushing his manager to work.
Both drivers were pulled over at the Lyttelton Police Station, where they were charged with reckless and negligent driving.
They have since been released on bail of R2,000 and R2,500 respectively and are expected to appear in Pretoria trial court this week.
Maremane said officials have successfully cracked down on sprinters using their latest moving violation recorders (MVR).
According to Maremane, the MVR records the average speed measured at a minimum of 500 meters and is then recorded and downloaded for investigation and prosecution purposes.
“Deaths on the road are caused by driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving, and speeding.
“The Gauteng Traffic Police High Speed Unit will be on high alert as it continues to conduct patrols on the main Gauteng roads to ensure that drivers adhere to the general speed limit.”
