JOHANNESBURG – President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Wednesday that measures to eradicate gender-based violence cannot be carried out by the government alone.
Ramaphosa spoke at the presidential dialogue on gender-based violence and femicide that marks the start of the 16-day campaign of activism.
The government has been under pressure to address the extent of gender-based violence in the country.
Responding to the call to end gender-based violence in the country last year, Ramaphosa took steps by allocating a budget specifically to address the problem and initiated a national strategic plan aimed at ending gender-based violence in the next five years.
The president said the war on violence against gender violence is far from over.
“The national strategic plan prepared by the women of our country guides the effort to combat gender violence and femicide. Since the beginning of this year, we have made progress in implementation in key areas regarding the care and support that our nation must provide to survivors of gender-based violence.
Secondly, education, but more importantly, the prevention measures that must be taken to prevent gender violence ”.
The president has called on men and young people to participate actively in the fight against gender violence, and said that it is important that men are the promoters of this fight through mechanisms that reach all sectors of society .
“The fight to end gender-based violence is both simple and very complex. It is simple because violence against women and children can be stopped immediately if all men in our country make the conscious decision not to harm a woman or child again and live by that decision. “
The president has also encouraged South Africans to do their bit to remember those who lost their lives at the hands of abusers with flags from across the country expected to fly at half mast.
