CAPE TOWN – Finance Minister Tito Mboweni on Friday dismissed reports that South Africa missed the payment deadline for a COVID-19 vaccine.

Mboweni was responding to a debate on the medium-term budget policy statement (MTBPS) in the National Assembly yesterday when parliament concluded its business for the year.

He presented the MTBPS for adoption by the National Assembly.

Geordin Hill Lewis of the Democratic Alliance asked Mboweni about reports that the Treasury failed to pay on time … jeopardizing the nation’s vaccine prospects.

“How is it justified not to meet the deadline to pay for the COVID vaccine but to pay the SAA ransom before this House has approved that allocation today?”

Mboweni responded by saying that the Solidarity Fund had not missed any deadlines and would make the payment this month.

“It is very important that when you are an adult, you must first inform yourself of all the facts before opening your mouth. The fact is that we have enough time, until around December 15, to make the payment, so that we have not missed the payment ”.

The Finance Minister confirmed that the fund has earmarked 500 million rand for vaccine stocks and still has a long time to pay it off.
