JOHANNESBURG – Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula on Saturday called reports that the newly appointed CEO of the South African Passenger Rail Agency (Prasa) is too old for the job as tabloid.

Mbalula’s response comes after a report by research group GroundUp stated that the appointment of Zolani Matthews goes against the company’s age policy.

According to GroundUp, Matthews cannot fill the position at Prasa because he has passed the retirement policy age of 63.

The new CEO is 64 years old.

The minister has called the claims made in the article “unfounded fabrication.”

He insists that the appointment was correct.

Mbalula spokesperson Ayanda-Allie Paine said: “We call on GroundUp, as well as other stakeholders, to work with us on the restoration of Prasa, as well as to achieve our goal of positioning commuter rail as the backbone of our public transportation system. “

The state parastatal has had 10 acting CEOs since the exit of Lucky Montana in 2015.
