Johannesburg – The ANC Women’s League in the Northwest has reacted with anger and shock to the news that a local mayor accused of rape and kidnapping two minors has been released on bail of 1,000 rand.

The mayor of the local Lekwa-Teemane municipality, Mpho Pilane, surrendered to the police on Monday, accompanied by his lawyer, following an incident that allegedly occurred on December 8.

The 36-year-old man appeared in Delareyville Magistrates Court the same day for rape, sexual assault and kidnapping and was later released on bail of 1,000 rand.

An enraged member of the ANCWL said that this case shows that South African justice favors those with money.

“If you don’t have money, justice will not be on your side,” said the woman.

“But we will not be silent (on this matter). The League is even more furious that so-called leaders who commit such horrific criminal activities are supposed to be in the forefront to ensure that all pieces of legislation to combat the scourge of gender-based violence are implemented without fail. “

According to Northwest Police spokesman Brigadier Sabata Mokgwaabone, the two girls, ages 15 and 16, told police that they went with Pilane to a guest house in Delareyville on December 8.

There, Pilane allegedly poured alcohol on them.

“The accusations are that one was sexually assaulted and the other raped.

“They went home the next day and told their parents. Then the police were informed ”.

Mokgwaabone said the two girls were taken to a doctor for examination during the rape procedure.

Last month, a high-ranking member of the Mpumalanga ANC, who is also a former MEC, was released on bail of 20,000 rand after being accused of raping his two sons.

Her stepson is also accused of raping the children.
