JOHANNESBURG – The Department of Basic Education (DBE) announced Saturday that the leaked Maths Paper 2 and Physical Science Paper 2 matrix tests will not be rewritten.

The rewrites were scheduled for December 15 and 17 respectively.

In a statement, the Board of Education said it agreed that the 2020 matrix class had faced many challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and that it would be unfair to subject them to more uncertainties.

However, the council said it was concerned that the court’s ruling did not address the credibility, fairness and integrity of the tuition exams, due to the leak of documents.

Earlier on Saturday, the Democratic Union of Teachers of South Africa (Sadtu) said that the quality assurance body, Umalusi, must abide by the Pretoria High Court ruling and declare the Higher National Certificate (NSC) exams credible.

Sadtu’s Nomusa Cembi said they must abide by the judgment that declared the rewriting illegal and irregular.
Meanwhile, the Department of Basic Education said next week’s proposed rewrite of the leaked math and physical science tests is off the table.

The department said it would now focus on the next phase of exam administration, including final preparations for full grading.
