Matthew Andrews, the outgoing Principal of Cornwall Hill College and a News24 Super School winner, has earned 10 honors in the 2020 IEB Matrix Exams.

Andrews’ results included 98% for information technology (IT) and 97% for mathematics, a demonstration of his passion for mathematics and IT, which he will use in his studies towards a degree in actuarial science at the University of Pretoria .

Andrews was one of 13,163 candidates who completed their Independent Examination Board (IEB) Senior National Certificate exams last year.

The schools that wrote the exams had an overall pass rate of 98.07%.

But Andrews didn’t just spend the last year spending his time studying.

“After a week of online learning, Matthew realized that the teachers were lacking in personal interaction. He initiated and compiled a thank you video for all the teachers in the school. This was done from collected encouraging video messages of students, saying what they missed and appreciated about their favorite teachers, “said her mother, Anneke Andrews.

Despite the interruption of the academic year in 2020, Andrews and the principal, Patricia Chaminuka, as well as the student executive, carried out a charity drive to collect 1.35 tons of clothes and food for the Ditshego House of Laughter, a non-profit organization in Centurion that cares for children and babies when their parents can’t.

Donations secured the News24 Super Schools Class of the Year award for matrics.

Andrews has held various interests throughout his school year, having served as a patrol leader in the 9th Irene Scouts in Irene and holding the national colors as a Springbok Scout. He is also an online AP Math and Math tutor and “believes that one of the best ways to learn is teaching as it works both ways and confirms your understanding of the topic.”

“It makes a difference in someone’s life, it’s rewarding, and it enriches their own learning,” Andrews said.

In 2020, he participated in Siyanqoba, an advanced mathematics program run by the University of Pretoria for top math students. He came second in the second knockout round by participating in an online Russian International Mathematics Competition. It will compete in the final round in March 2021.

Andrews was named a top student at Cornwall Hill College in 2020 and was recognized through various academic and good character awards.
