Massive increase in these 2 types of crime in Gauteng

SAPS Acting Provincial Commissioner in Gauteng Major General Patricia Rampota released provincial crime statistics on Tuesday for the second quarter, July through September 2020.

The police department’s lead for Gauteng pointed to an increase in cash-in-transit crimes and truck theft during the reporting period.

CIT robberies increased 107.7%, 14 cases more than before; while the lifting of trucks increased by 52.1%, 85 more cases.

Alex Terblanche, Director of Budget Business Insurance, recently noted that criminals in South Africa have set their sights on a target following the popularity of online ordering in a post-Covid-19 environment: couriers.

“We have noticed an increase in the theft of courier vehicles. In some of these cases, the vehicles have been recovered but the goods are missing. The fact that most of these vans and vehicles are being taken by force or in armed robberies and kidnappings is of great concern, ”he said.

Courier vehicle theft in Gauteng is notably higher than in any other province, and currently represents a significant and growing risk, Budget Business Insurance said.

Presenting national crime statistics last Friday, Police Minister Bheki Cele said that the criminals’ struggle to “catch up” is also reflected in rising numbers of cash thefts in transit.

“It is clear that the armed gangs that target the cash vans are becoming more desperate and ruthless as the year draws to a close. These criminals stop at nothing to carry out their criminal acts, they often do so in public spaces near innocent bystanders ”.

Cele said that while he is pleased that progress has been made in eliminating some of these criminal syndicates and in recovering some of the stolen money, “the fact that this quarter saw 24 more cases of CIT than the comparable prior quarter in this crime it means that more can and should be done to infiltrate these gangs and bring the CIT robberies to their knees ”.

South Africans have been hit hard in recent months, thanks to the Covid-19 outbreak and the resulting lockdown period, which saw many people forced to close their businesses and millions to lose their jobs. This put enormous pressure on the collective mental well-being within the country.

the second quarter from July to September 2020/2021 with the Tshwane district as the only district that recorded an increase for murder.

According to Major General Rampota, murders decreased in the province by 10.1%. The police chief said that discussions and road rage were the main contributors to the murder statistics in Gauteng. Arguments or misunderstandings contributed to more than 143 murder cases, not related to domestic violence.

More than 76 robbery-related deaths, while vigilantism or collective justice accounted for 43 murder cases. Domestic violence, including love triangles, contributed to 26 murder cases, while 18 murders were the result of taxi violence.

‘Retaliation’ and revenge contributed to 18 murders, while illicit mining contributed to more than 13 murders.

Property-related crimes decreased in the province with a case difference of 7,755 cases, 25% less.

The private security company Fidelity ADT reported an alarming increase in the number of armed robberies in homes in Gauteng during October and November.

Wahl Bartmann, CEO of Fidelity Services Group, said the group has recorded 20 incidents in southern and eastern Johannesburg, with Alberton, Springs and Turffontein recording the highest number of armed robberies.

Nine incidents have been recorded in North Johannesburg, three of which have been residential burglaries and the remainder commercial burglaries.

“In our presence in Pretoria, we have had 15 incidents from October to date. Five of these have been commercial and eight residential and in our most remote areas we have registered 10 incidents, seven commercial and the rest residential, ”said Bartmann.

He said all of these incidents have involved armed suspects. “We traditionally know that a staggering 8 out of 10 residential burglaries are committed using information from domestic workers, gardeners and former employees.

“Home and business owners should be aware of the importance of examining all personnel very carefully. We encourage homeowners to use a specialized placement consultant who can do the necessary background checks, ”he said.
