The Department of Transportation has issued a directive granting a massive extension to South Africans whose driver’s licenses have expired or expire between March and December this year.
According to the department, licenses that expire during the period between March 26, 2020 and December 31, 2020 inclusive, will now be valid, and their validity periods will be extended for an additional grace period ending on December 31, 2020. August 2021.
This applies to
- All learning licenses;
- Driving license cards;
- Temporary driving licenses; Y
- Professional driving licenses.
This takes effect immediately.
This is the latest in a series of extensions granted to drivers, who have struggled to renew licenses in the first place due to the Covid-19 lockdown, and have since faced issues in traffic departments bogged down with huge backlogs in the application processing.
According to the latest report, South Africa had a backlog of 320,000 driving licenses, and the demand was growing by 90,000 each month.
At the time, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula said that the delay was not only due to complications from Covid-19, but was also caused by corruption among administrative staff at driver’s license testing centers.
South Africans who have been trying to renew their driver’s licenses expressed frustration with the online reservation system, where it is extremely difficult to obtain a slot for license renewal.
