JOHANNESBURG – Organizations have spoken out about the newly launched political party, Action South Africa, with some questioning whether it will have enough clout to overthrow the ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng.
Action SA is led by former Johannesburg Mayor of the Democratic Alliance (DA), Herman Mashaba, and launched on Saturday.
Mashaba said Action SA was committed to correcting what it called “a broken political system.”
Its members so far include former DA regional leaders Funzela Ngobeni and Abel Tau, as well as former ANC MPs Makhosi Khoza and Vytjie Mentor, who criticized corruption under former President Jacob Zuma.
Mashaba has promised tough diplomacy, a reformed police force to stamp out corruption, revive the economy and crack down on illegal immigrants.
Analysts have expressed mixed feelings about the political future of the new formation, however, they agreed that a different political home was necessary for disgruntled and first-time voters.
Political analyst Ralph Mathekga said Action SA was a viable option for Gauteng residents.
“There is a space for people to form a different policy that is quite realistic. [and] it is about transformation and the main problems of society, but not from the prism of what I have seen on offer, ”said Mathekga.
Mathekga said the launch of the party showed that there was still more growth in South Africa’s political landscape.
“South Africa, with more than 50 million inhabitants, still has a lot to offer when it comes to political parties in the country,” he said.
Mashaba said his goal was to participate in next year’s local government elections, where he planned to overthrow the failed leadership in the three metropolitan areas of Gauteng, Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni.
