The Action SA leader said such a fund should be administered by private medical aids which could then be forced to ensure a transparent and efficient deployment for all South Africans for the sake of collective health and prosperity.

JOHANNESBURG – Action SA leader Herman Mashaba said the government had failed in its attempt to secure a vaccine and should now issue a mandate to allow the establishment of a private sector-led national COVID-19 vaccination fund.

He said it should be managed by private medical aid that could then be forced to ensure transparent and efficient deployment for all South Africans for the sake of collective health and prosperity.

The government has been criticized for not quickly securing a vaccine for the country.

On Sunday, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said talks were taking place outside the UN’s Covax facility to see if a vaccine could be brought to the country in the coming months.

Mashaba said that private medical aid was well placed to manage such initiatives, insisting that they would be free of corruption and exorbitant amounts already spent fighting the pandemic.

He said that people like him would be willing to help.

“Medical aid and societies can start looking for small funds so that all South Africans who want to get vaccinated, like me, are really willing to contribute to it. But without any government intervention. “
