JOHANNESBURG – Former project manager for Eskom’s Kusile power plant, Abram Masango, told the state capture commission that Matshela Koko called him several times and suspected that his movements or calls were being monitored.

Masango said that Koko had called him into a meeting at Melrose Arch with Salim Essa, where Koko took his phone and handed it to someone when they attended that meeting.

He is testifying about the events related to the suspension of Eskom executives after a meeting at the residence of former president Jacob Zuma in KwaZulu-Natal.

Masango said Koko told him that he and three other executives would be suspended but that he, Koko, would return.

He said that at that meeting, Koko told Essa that Masango could act as the group’s chief executive when the executives were suspended.

Masango said that after that meeting, he called his superiors and was surprised that Koko found out.

“Koko called me and said, ‘Makhi, you are speaking (in Zulu).’ Later I understood what she meant after meeting Mr. Marokana and she called me again and said, ‘You are speaking.’ So, I started to connect [the dots] and it seemed like I was trapped and I understood to say that my movements are being monitored or they are listening to me.

Koko took to Twitter last week to announce that she would testify at the commission this Thursday, but the commission has yet to announce it.
