Marx out of five to leave Lions, Jantjies ready to stay

The Lions have confirmed that they will bid farewell to five players, including World Cup winner Springbok Malcolm Marx. Craig lewis reports.

As SA Rugby’s 21-day contract exit window concludes, there are a series of player moves taking place on what has effectively become a “transfer day.”

On Friday, the Lions officially confirmed that they will part ways with Marx, Ruan Vermaak, Tyrone Green, Shaun Reynolds and Neil de Bruin.

While these outings will be a blow to the Lions, the good news is that SARugbymag.co.za understands that Elton Jantjies will remain with the Johannesburg franchise.

Jantjies was another Springbok rumored on Thursday that he would possibly be online for an outing, but is believed to remain loyal to the Lions.

Another player the Lions will be delighted to have retained services with is renowned center Wandisile Simelane, which this website understands is still on national radar.

Given that players have the option to cancel their current contracts in favor of overseas deals, Marx is believed to be committing himself full time to the Japanese club Kubota Spears.

Rudolf Straeuli, Executive Director of the Lions Rugby Company, thanked all the players for their valuable contributions, some of whom have been part of the Lions since their school days.

‘There is always a great feeling of loss and sadness when we lose family members. We wish them well on their journey and we thank them for some very special moments they spent with the Lions, “said Straeuli.

Meanwhile, Lions Rugby Company and EPS (Pty) Ltd have appointed a COVID-19 task force that will ensure their facilities are safe for staff to return to work once prohibited from doing so.
