Mantashe confirms government purchase of 6,800MW of solar and wind power

Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe said Eskom must purchase electricity from independent power producers (IPPs) and that programs will target grid connection as soon as possible.

JOHANNESBURG – Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe has officially confirmed that the government now intends to purchase 6,800 megawatts of solar and wind power.

The plan is described in the government bulletin.

He also said that South Africa would acquire 3,000 megawatts of electricity generated by gas, while 1,500 megawatts will be generated by coal.

Mantashe said Eskom must purchase electricity from independent power producers (IPP) and that the programs will target connection to the grid as soon as reasonably possible.
