JOHANNESBURG – The Nelson Mandela Foundation has criticized US President Donald Trump for allegedly making disparaging remarks about South Africa’s first democratically elected president.
Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen in his book: Unfair, One Memoir: The True Story of President Donald J. Trump’s Former Personal Attorney – wrote that Trump praised the apartheid-era government in South Africa, apparently saying that Mandela had ruined an entire country and was not a leader.
In a statement Monday, the foundation said leaders who behaved the way Trump does were “not in a position to offer authoritative comments on Madiba’s life and work.”
“The Nelson Mandela Foundation has collected the statements attributed to US President Donald Trump about African leaders in general and Nelson Mandela in particular, in a book by Michael Cohen entitled: ‘Unfair’.
“We do not believe that leaders who behave in the way that Trump does are in a position to offer authoritative comments on Madiba’s life and work,” the foundation said.
“Reflecting on leadership, Madiba once said: ‘A good leader can engage in a debate frankly and fully, knowing that in the end he and the other side must be closer and therefore emerge stronger. You don’t have that idea when you’re arrogant, shallow, and uninformed. ‘ We would recommend these words to Mr. Trump for his consideration. “
