Manchester United sideline Jesse Lingard hasn’t started in the Premier League for nearly a year, but his luck could turn in the January transfer window.
Lingard is set to go on loan next month, with Sheffield United keen to carry the attacking midfielder until the end of the season.
The 28-year-old has played just two games for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team this season, at the EFL Cup in September, and has not started a top-flight match since January 1.
He is about to enter the last six months of his contract and his days at United appear to be numbered.
But Chris Wilder’s Blades could be about to come to the rescue of the former England international.
United manager Solskjaer spoke extensively with Wilder about a loan deal for Lingard following the Red Devils’ 3-2 win at Bramall Lane on Thursday, according to the Manchester Evening News.
The clubs already have a good relationship, as goalkeeper Dean Henderson spent two years on loan at Sheffield United before returning to Old Trafford this season to battle David de Gea for number one.
One sticking point could be Lingard’s salary, and United hopes the Blades can afford most of their £ 100,000 weekly pay package.
Sheffield United spent £ 53m on new players over the summer, although the investment doesn’t seem to be paying off so far, with Wilder’s side rooted at the bottom of the table having won just one point from their first 13 games.
Lingard’s contract expires at the end of this season, but United is expected to activate a one-year extension in order to recoup a transfer fee for him next summer.
He has played 24 games for England and was a starter during the Three Lions’ run to the World Cup semi-finals two years ago.
However, Lingard has not played for the Three Lions since the Nations League final in June 2019, and he desperately needs to revive his career after scoring just three league goals in the last two years.
