Marcus rashford once again sank Paris saint germain after scoring the decisive goal in From Manchester United 2-1 Champions League victory in the French capital on Tuesday, as Barcelona sent a message with a resounding 5-1 victory over Ferencvaros.
Rashford, who scored the winning shot when United knocked out PSG in 2019, finished off with a low shot three minutes from time that won a thrilling Group H match in a nearly empty Parc des Princes.
United had taken the lead in the 23rd minute when Bruno Fernandes conceded from the point on the second down, but Anthony Martial inexplicably headed a Neymar corner kick into his own goal 10 minutes after the break.
The remainder of the match was an end-to-end affair with both sides opting for victory rather than waiting for a draw, with Rashford taking the points after Keylor Navas denied him twice early in the match.
“Of course it’s a nice feeling. The most important thing is that we won the match and we are in a solid position now in the group,” Rashford told BT Sport.
“It is the first game, the concentration and intensity that we show today we have to carry forward in the next Premier League games.”
The victory prepares United for next week’s home clash with RB Leipzig, who lead the group after beating Istanbul Basaksehir 2-0 in Germany.
Ronald Koeman had his first Champions League campaign as Barcelona coach with a winning start with a sure win over Ferencvaros that gives them control of Group G, leading but tied on three points with Juventus.
Ferencvaros, the first Hungarian team to reach the group stage in 11 years, got off to a brilliant start and even had the ball in the net through Tokmac Nguen only to have the mighty 12-minute goal canceled out of game.
Messi won and converted the penalty to give the Catalans an advantage in the 27th minute and the game was as good as when Ansu Fati cut home a sumptuous pass from Frenkie de Jong just before half-time.
Philippe Coutinho scored the third before Ihor Kharatin recovered a goal from the penalty spot after Gerard Piqué was sent off for stopping Nguen as he charged towards goal.
Piqué’s red card means he will miss next week’s game at Juventus, a bigger test of Barça’s capabilities.
Pedri and Ousmane Dembélé ended the scoring for the 10 hosts as they prepare for the weekend’s Clásico with Real Madrid.
“We entered it with the maximum possible motivation,” Fati said. “It’s a Classic, a game I’ve always dreamed of playing.”
Barça announced contract extensions for Gerard Piqué, Frenkie de Jong, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Clement Lenglet almost immediately after the victory.
Juventus looked comfortable in their 2-0 win at Dynamo Kiev in what was Andrea Pirlo’s first Champions League game on the bench, with Álvaro Morata scoring twice to take the points away from the Italians.
It was a good night for Italy as Ciro Immobile took revenge on his old club, Borussia Dortmund, by scoring in Lazio’s 3-1 win over the Bundesliga club in Rome, their first Liga de Liga match. Champions in 13 years.
Immobile managed just three goals in 24 Bundesliga games for Dortmund in 2014/15, but last season’s European Golden Boot winner eclipsed Dortmund’s star forward Erling Braut Haaland by scoring the first goal for the hosts after just six minutes.
Lazio took the lead twice midway through the first half as Marwin Hitz deflected a Luis Alberto corner kick at his own goal.
Haaland pulled one back with a strong finish, but Immobile pulled off an easy finish for Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro to give Lazio a big win.
“There was an extra flavor and we are satisfied that the game was played perfectly,” Immobile continued.
Simone Inzaghi’s men are tied at three points with Club Brugge in Group F following their spectacular 2-1 victory at Zenit St Petersburg thanks to a goal from Charles De Ketelaere in the 93rd minute.
Chelsea is still waiting for a £ 220 million spending spree to pay off. He started his campaign with a boring 0-0 draw in Group E with Sevilla at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues have now won just two of their first six games of the season and Lampard’s only consolation from a cautious encounter was a rare clean sheet.
