Durban: The man who captured the now viral video of two KwaDukuza peacekeepers allegedly trying to arrest a 4-year-old boy and then handcuffed the boy’s father, has spoken out about the terrible traumatic experience.

The disturbing video went viral on Monday afternoon, evoking much anger and criticism from residents, over the way officers mistreated the young man.

According to the man, officers arrived at the closed complex over the weekend to arrest several people accused of failing to comply with the closing regulations.

He told the North Coast Courier that officers responded to a complaint after several families were seen on Chaka’s Rock beach around 7:30 a.m. The man claimed that officers arrived as residents left the beach.

“We were not near the beach when the police stormed into the complex to arrest us in sight of our children, who were completely overwhelmed when they saw their parents being taken away. Our children were left alone and the neighbors had to take care of them.” until we were released, “said the man.

At least 11 people, including an 88-year-old man and his 81-year-old wife, were arrested. The couple was released on bail of R1,000.

KwaDukuza municipal spokesman Sipho Mkhize said an internal investigation into the “dispute” between officers and the boy’s father was ongoing.

“Currently, we are committed to an internal investigation to determine the facts of the entire incident, but we consider the emotional issues that the circulating video has caused,” Mkhize said.

Acting KwaDukuza Mayor Dolly Govender said she was horrified by the video.
