Durban – Police and private ambulance search and rescue teams were called to Howick Falls in KZN on Wednesday to rescue a man who had fallen approximately 40 meters from the observation deck.
Ross Campbell, a spokesman for ER24, said the man was allegedly being chased by unknown assailants at 2 a.m. Wednesday morning when he fell off the rig.
“ER24 paramedics arrived just before 6:30 am after being alerted by South African police services already on the scene along with another private emergency service,” Campbell said.
“The observation deck is next to the falls and the patient could be seen clinging to a branch on a small ledge 40 meters from the 95-meter cliff face. Our medic donned his harness while SAPS cordoned off about 30 bystanders, he said.
Campbell said the SAPS search and rescue team arrived and installed a rope system.
“Since our doctor was already dressed, they decided to lower him to the patient to save time. The patient was evaluated and found to have suffered only minor injuries. He was then attached to the doctor’s harness using a sling and both were lifted back to the platform just before 8 a.m. He was transferred to Northdale Hospital by the other private emergency service on site for further care, ”he said.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident.
