In an interview with SowetanLIVE, Mahlangu said that he and Masuku had gone to the mall to buy toiletries and have lunch when the incident occurred.
“When we entered the mall we noticed that a security guard was looking at us.
“As soon as we entered a Clicks store, the guard came up to us and told me that I was not welcome in the mall because I was harassing customers with my outfit,” Mahlangu said.
“The guard told me that I was only wearing underwear and this was driving away customers, and that is why I was not allowed to shop at the mall. I refused to leave and told the security guard to call the person who indicated that he should tell me to get out of the mall.
“About two minutes later, the man who identified himself as the owner of the mall arrived. He started telling me to get out of the mall, but I still refused. We had exchanged words with the owner of the mall, which resulted in him ordering security to use his walkie talkie to request the reinforcement of three more guards. “
Said wWhen the guards arrived, he began to retreat, realizing that they were going to overpower him.
“My partner and I hastily bought half the items we were looking for. I am grateful that the Clicks store allowed us to purchase the items. However, I am disappointed that my girlfriend and I did not have lunch at the mall, especially because we were hungry due to the harassment, ”said Mahlangu.
“I left the mall with a broken heart and even now, as we speak, I’m still not well emotionally.”
The center’s management said in a statement: “The Boulders Mall wishes to apologize unreservedly for the incident that took place at Clicks.
“The center would like to clarify that it does not deny entry based on appearance and clothing. It is unfortunate that the incident that occurred within Clicks is seen as intolerant towards other cultures and clothing.
“We would like to state that based on various complaints received from shoppers, the person in question was asked to leave the store because his underwear was indecently exposing him.
“We did not have and do not intend to hurt or discriminate against anyone because of their cultural beliefs and practices. The exchange in the video does not represent the core beliefs and values of the center.
“We take this opportunity to once again apologize to those who feel hurt by the incident. The decision was made in the interest of other shoppers and employees of the shopping center, ”said the center’s management.
